High school built in 1983 when the city’s population out grew a comfortable size for the students to attend a single place. Some residents wanted the new school to share the same name as the original one, New Prairie High, but once an argument arose, many wanted new names for both.
Finally, an agreement was met and the new school was called James T. Welks High, named after the farmer who donated the land to the city for the school.
