Early Days
Born in Palermo, Sicily, Sofia immigrated to the United States in 1914 with her family. Eventually, she and her family settled on the land that would become New Prairie in 1917. Her father, Nucci Balfone, became mayor of the newly founded town in 1918.
Friends with Stewart Filcher
Sofia became the fancy of Stewart Filcher, who, over time, became her friend. In January of 1929, Stewart presented a gift to her and asked her if she would marry him.
