The New Adventures of the Midnight Sleuth follows Midnight, a partially amnesiac fake detective who solves crimes in modern-day San Francisco. He's helped by his friend Laura Talbot, a late-night talk show host and former reporter. Laura has Midnight on her talkshow after he solves a case involving the disappearance of a major political figure's daughter. Midnight's partial amnesia is a constant source of comedy as his forgetfulness causes Laura to be the brain behind their detective work.

Production
 +
Concept
 +
The reimagining of the show was designed in a way to better reflect the modern tastes of the audience. Producer Michael J. Bayheimer was heavily influenced by the modern reboot of Sherlock Holmes 'SHERLOCK' and borrowed a lot of the tone and imagery for his reboot. Another major change was his removal of the original sidekick "Linda" from the show, deciding she wasn't necessary for the modern audiences.

 +
Characters
 +
The Midnight Sleuth universe is filled with numerous characters both major and incidental throughout the six-season storylines. As the years went by, many incidental characters (ones that appeared in only one episode) started coming back to be a part of a much bigger story arc.
 +

 +
*The Midnight Sleuth
 +
**The detective with good hair, Midnight is one of the two core characters of the show. His backstory is a little iffy and unknown even after six seasons, however, what is known about him is that he calls Milwaukee and Chicago home, and moved to the San Francisco area sometime in the late 90s.
 +

 +
*Laura Talbot
 +
**Talk show host turned detective. She met Midnight while having him on her talk show after his first major case.

 +
Troubled Production
 +
9 episodes into the show's first season, the studio decided a drastic rewrite of episode 12 (which had been planned to be a mid-season regular episode). Their hopes were to breathe new life into the show before it got canceled and delayed the remaining 3 episodes of the season until after the winter season. These last three episodes proved to be the craziest and most un-Midnight Sleuth the show could be and ultimately led to the very cancellation they were hoping to avoid.
 +

 +
Behind The Scenes
 +
*Midnight's trademark "great hair" was not an original element of the show. In the pilot, filmed 9 months prior to the show being picked up, the actor playing Midnight had just come off of a war movie resulting in his buzz cut hairdo. When he came back to film episode 2, the producers loved the longer hair the actor had and decided to keep it, writing it into the show and creating a new trademark.
 +
*Laura was originally not part of the show and her addition in episode two was the result of a studio note to producer Michael J. Bayheimer.

  |ShortSummary    = The police investigate the deaths of a series of people who all appear to have committed suicide by taking a poisonous pill. They turn to their unofficial consultant, Sherlock Holmes, who deduces various elements pointing to a serial killer. Meanwhile, Holmes is introduced to John Watson, a former soldier who served in Afghanistan, and the pair immediately move into a flat in Baker Street. John Watson slowly gets to know and trust Sherlock despite police officer Sally Donovan (Vinette Robinson) warning him that Holmes is a psychopath and will one day be responsible for murder. Sherlock's brother Mycroft (Mark Gatiss), at first not revealing his identity, arranges a meeting with Watson and asks whether he'll spy on Sherlock for money, but John refuses. After a series of incidents, the person responsible for the deaths, a taxicab driver (Phil Davis), reveals that his victims took their own lives by playing a game of Russian roulette with two pills: one fatally poisonous, the other safe. Before Sherlock can play the cabbie's game, John shoots the cabbie from an opposite building. Before he dies, the taxicab driver reveals that "Moriarty" was his sponsor.

  |ShortSummary    = Sherlock is hired by an old friend to investigate a mysterious break-in at a bank in the City. He discovers that symbols spray-painted onto an office wall are a coded message intended for an employee of the bank, who is later discovered dead in his flat. The next day, a journalist is killed and the same symbols are found nearby. Sherlock and John follow a trail of clues that link the two dead men to a Chinese smuggling ring, who are trying to retrieve a valuable item that one of the dead men stole. Sherlock eventually cracks the coded message based on Suzhou numerals and a book cipher, but not before John and Sarah (John's date) are kidnapped by the criminals, who believe that John is Sherlock. Sherlock rescues John and Sarah, but the leader of the gang escapes. Later, the leader of the gang is in communication with her superior, who is identified by the initial "M". She is then shot by a sniper.

  |ShortSummary    = Midnight goes on 'Late Night with Laura Talbot' to talk about his miraculous saving of the govenor's daughter. While there, the director of the show is murdered, resulting in Laura and Midnight trying to solve the case together.

Loosely based on the short story "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", the storyline also incorporates elements from other Sherlock Holmes stories; the concept of coded messages, the markings on the feet of the Black Lotus members and the plot of escaping a secret society, then being tracked to and killed in England all feature in The Valley of Fear. A murder victim being found inside a locked room, accessible only by climbing, alludes to The Sign of the Four.

  |ShortSummary    = Sherlock is commissioned by Mycroft to investigate the suspicious death of a government employee, who was working on a top-secret defence project: the Bruce-Partington Project. After rejecting the case and handing it over to John, Sherlock begins to be taunted by a criminal who puts his victims into explosive vests and sets Sherlock deadlines to solve the apparently unrelated cases, which include a twenty-year-old cold case involving the shoes of a drowned boy, the disappearance of a businessman, the death of a TV personality, and the assassination of a guard of an art gallery by the "Golem". As Sherlock solves the cases, he finds links between them. After clearing up the original case of the civil servant, Sherlock tries to force his unseen adversary to reveal himself. Near the end of the episode, Sherlock and "Jim Moriarty" reach a standoff, where Jim reveals that he is responsible for the crimes. In the final seconds, Sherlock Holmes points his gun at a bomb on the floor that had been strapped to John.

The episode's storyline is somewhat derived from The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans and makes references to "The Five Orange Pips" at various points (as per the five bomb victims and electronic beeps on the phone) in addition to other works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

When it was announced that The Midnight Sleuth was coming to television, most of the public was unaware of its history as a radio program and this unfamiliarity was easily noticed in the lack of viewers. While the studio heavily promoted it as the next biggest thing, the show struggled to find it's footing in the first season. Most viewers said it was far too over the top compared to similar programs at the time, while fans of the classic Midnight Sleuth said it had nothing in common with it. The show ultimately was canceled midseason.

 +
After much fan outcry, online funding campaigns, and protests, the show found a new home through the online streaming service Streamer and was renewed for a new season. The show became the online streaming service's highest-rated program and was quickly renewed for an additional four seasons. It ran until 2023 when the producers decided to end the show before it started to lose steam.

The New Adventures of Midnight Sleuth was a modern reboot of the classic radio drama The Midnight Sleuth.

Premise

The New Adventures of the Midnight Sleuth follows Midnight, a partially amnesiac fake detective who solves crimes in modern-day San Francisco. He's helped by his friend Laura Talbot, a late-night talk show host and former reporter. Laura has Midnight on her talkshow after he solves a case involving the disappearance of a major political figure's daughter. Midnight's partial amnesia is a constant source of comedy as his forgetfulness causes Laura to be the brain behind their detective work.

Production

Concept

The reimagining of the show was designed in a way to better reflect the modern tastes of the audience. Producer Michael J. Bayheimer was heavily influenced by the modern reboot of Sherlock Holmes 'SHERLOCK' and borrowed a lot of the tone and imagery for his reboot. Another major change was his removal of the original sidekick "Linda" from the show, deciding she wasn't necessary for the modern audiences.

Characters

The Midnight Sleuth universe is filled with numerous characters both major and incidental throughout the six-season storylines. As the years went by, many incidental characters (ones that appeared in only one episode) started coming back to be a part of a much bigger story arc.

  • The Midnight Sleuth
    • The detective with good hair, Midnight is one of the two core characters of the show. His backstory is a little iffy and unknown even after six seasons, however, what is known about him is that he calls Milwaukee and Chicago home, and moved to the San Francisco area sometime in the late 90s.
  • Laura Talbot
    • Talk show host turned detective. She met Midnight while having him on her talk show after his first major case.

Troubled Production

9 episodes into the show's first season, the studio decided a drastic rewrite of episode 12 (which had been planned to be a mid-season regular episode). Their hopes were to breathe new life into the show before it got canceled and delayed the remaining 3 episodes of the season until after the winter season. These last three episodes proved to be the craziest and most un-Midnight Sleuth the show could be and ultimately led to the very cancellation they were hoping to avoid.

Behind The Scenes

  • Midnight's trademark "great hair" was not an original element of the show.
  • Laura was originally not part of the show and her addition in episode two was the result of a studio note to producer Michael J. Bayheimer.
