Bio
Early Days
Martha grew up in Norwich, United Kingdom, and quickly found herself on stage performing in traveling shows with her parents. Their act, The Joking Chaplins, was popular in Europe as many thought they were related to comedic legend Charlie Chaplin.
In 1928, the family took their act overseas to the United States, where they toured the East Coast for the next 6 years. Martha left the family group in 1934 to pursue other work as a stage and screen actress.
Sandra Bean & Talk Radio
In 1942, Martha met Sandra Bean while on an audition for an upcoming film. Martha ultimately beat Sandra out for the role, but the two became good friends and practically inseparable.
In 1970, the two were approached to do a weekly talk show about whatever they wanted to and created the Sandra & Martha's Tips of the Week. The show quickly gained popularity among listeners, who fell in love with the two bickering, which directly contradicted the planned format of delivering helpful household tips. The show stayed on the air for almost 40 years, even while attempting to rebrand and redo the show's format. Soon, listeners found themselves listening to the ongoing adventures and lives of both Sandra and Martha.
Death
After their long-running talk show ended, Martha retired to Miami and finally married Gaston Truman, a friend who had shown romantic interest in her for the last 15 years. Martha died on July 1, 2017, in her sleep.
