Harold Keach is a Hollywood writer/director best known for his work on two of The Motherboard franchise films and his independently made paranormal thriller E1:01 (1998).
Early Life & Career
Keach began his career in the mid-1990s making low-budget experimental short films. Uninterested in standard slasher tropes, Keach focused his writing on Y2K anxieties and human isolation caused by early internet technology.
In 1998, Keach wrote and directed his feature debut, E1:01. Shot on a meager budget, the cyber-mystery about phantom webcam signals gained a cult following among tech enthusiasts and festival critics, establishing his reputation as an inventive indie writer.
The Indie Era & Trevino Discovery
Throughout the 2000s, Keach maintained creative control by directing small-budget independent thrillers, including Static Logic (2001) and Cold Storage (2005).
His major industry turning point came with the 2009 tech-horror film Hard Reset, which depicted a smart-home automation system trapping its developers. The film's critical success caught the attention of veteran Hollywood producer Levi Trevino, who was seeking a visionary director to modernize the dormant Motherboard film series for a smartphone-oriented generation.
Mainstream Success & Motherboard Reboot
Trevino hired Keach to direct diePhone (2012), the soft-reboot and flagship revival of The Motherboard Franchise. The film was a box-office hit, grossing over $110 million globally and cementing Keach as a mainstream studio director.
Following the success of diePhone, Keach co-wrote and directed the sequel, Factory Settings (2015), which expanded the lore of the franchise into corporate military history and cloud computing.
