Jake Calvin was a police detective who attempted to arrest Vinnie Sporteino for the murder of Michael Fanucci.
Early Years
Jake lived with his family on a farm just outside New Prairie city limits. He developed an early interest in becoming a police officer after watching Saturday afternoon serials at the local movie theater. After finishing high school, Jake attended La Crosse Police Academy, where he graduated with honors in a year. He then secured a position at Sauk County Police Department in 1977. The following year, in 1978, he moved to Chicago to pursue a job with the Chicago Police Force.
In early 1981, he arrested three armed robbers, rescuing nearly $400,000 worth of merchandise, and was promoted to Sergeant with a desk job. While completing the paperwork for the case, he discovered that all the suspects had prior links to Vinnie Sporteino. He then began working on unsolvable cases, eventually not only cracking them but also capturing some of Chicago’s most notorious criminals. In 1985, he brought in Francis O’Keefe, a well-known car thief, and was promoted to Lieutenant.
Working With Michael Fanucci
While in Chicago, Jake met mob boss Michael Fanucci after arresting some of his associates during a sting. Fanucci proposed a deal to Jake and the police: it would reduce crime while also allowing him to continue his illegal dealings. Jake was assigned to handle all matters with Fanucci on behalf of the police. Despite disagreeing with the agreement, he carried out his duties and met with Fanucci regularly.
Trapping Vinnie Sporteino
In February, 1995, Jake met William Hoyt, a New York City Police Officer who attempted to capture Vinnie Sporteino during his time in New York, but was unable to. Together, the two worked to capture Sonny Bellini and bribe him into helping bring down Sporteino. However, neither could figure out a legitimate way of doing it.
When Michael Fanucci missed a major meeting downtown Chicago, Jake gets suspicious. When the police find Fanucci's dead body in his penthouse it was initially ruled as a suicide, which never sat right with Jake. Investigating, and with the help of Sonny Bellini, Jake finds that Fanucci had previously setup a meeting to exchange a large amount of cocaine. Fanucci was last seen leaving Chicago, to go to said meeting, but hadn't been seen returning and the cocaine was no where to be found.
A short while later, Sonny was contacted by Sporteino asking for help finding someone to sell off a bunch of cocaine. Sonny told Jake, who with Hoyt decided the best way to find out what happened to Fanucci was to go undercover as someone who would be interested in purchasing the drugs from Sporteino and gain his trust in hopes of him confessing he caused Fanucci's death.
The two decided the best way would be or Jake to go undercover as Tom Cortini.
