The events surrounding the burning of New Prairie has remained a mystery for nearly 30 years. Eye witness accounts are contradictory and invalid. The source of the fire has been narrowed down to the intersection of Morte and Perdita in a small, abandoned shop. While many have agreed to the story that some kids were playing with some matches or an arson used a little too much gas, some believe the fire was started by other means. The most popular story, which has had some “eye-witnesses”, goes the legendary DARK KILLER was spotted late at night lingering around the intersection, peering into people’s homes and making strange noises. On the night the fire started, another man, who was never identified, showed up and confronted the DARK KILLER. He chased him into the abandoned shop and after a few moments, a loud, inhuman yell pierced the night air and the building erupted into flames. A short time later the surrounding houses burst into flames as well and soon the whole downtown was on fire. The mystery behind why the fire department was unable to get any pressure through their hoses while attempting to put out the fire has been attributed to the DARK KILLER’s presence. Another story goes that people claim seeing 4 people run into the small shop and one dressed entirely in black fled the shop moments before it went up in flames. The flames were said to be accompanied by a blinding flash of light which then sent them spreading onto the surrounding buildings. The final story, the one that the city gave the public after an investigation into the burning, was that faulty wiring caused a spark to ignite in the abandonded shop. No physical proof has ever surfaced that any of the stories is true and to this day the exact events that transpired that evening still remains a mystery.
