After the success of other detective radio shows in the 1930's, [[Clarence Hadden]] and [[Ernest Greene]] (both working in the mail room of a Los Angeles radio station) came up with a concept for a new show. During a pitch of their idea, a story about a mysterious detective solving crimes with the aid of his sidekick, the producers of the radio station called the show a copycat of the already popular "The Shadow" radio program. During the middle of their pitch, Hadden acted quickly and embellished on the story, changing the mysterious detective into a bumbling idiot who rarely solved the cases. With renewed interest in the pitch, Greene joined in and said the sidekick was the real brains behind the operation, stating that the idea was to give the helpless sidekick a chance to shine (an idea the opposite of what was common in most popular series of the time). The producers loved the new idea and hired the duo on the spot to create the show.

The Midnight Sleuth was an audio drama created by Dan Casey and Jeff Bell told in the style of 1930's radio mystery shows.

Origin of the Show

During the spring of 2011, Dan Casey had the idea of doing a podcast in the style of an old time mystery/detective show, having been inspired by "The Thrilling Adventure Hour", a podcast that was based on a similar concept. Casey's idea was to take the show "The Shadow" from the 1930's and flip the norm by having the female sidekick be the strong/intellectual in the duo and the main detective be a bumbling idiot. He pitched the concept to Jeff Bell who heavily researched the original "The Shadow" episodes, and proceeded to write, edit, and produce the show's run.

Behind the Scenes

Each episode was written with room to include adlibs while recording. Most of these adlibs became trademarks of the characters as time went by. Except for episode 5, all episodes were usually recorded with each performer doing their part separately from the rest of the cast. This was the result of minimal equipment available to production and was easier to mix, master, and add effects to the voices of the cast.

  • The Midnight Sleuth ..... Dan Casey
  • Linda Talbot ..... Kim Casey
  • Detective Davis ..... Jeff Bell
  • The Daybreak Gumshoe ..... Zachary Ziegler
